Single Phase Motor Test
Types of Test, Procedure and Testing Methods.
1- Single Phase Motor Test:
Single phase motor is used widely in domestic, residential, societies , industries and commercial. We utilize to the motor as different types but sometimes motor does not work then we think what happened. If the motor is malfunctioning then the motor will have to test. After testing we can know about actual situation of motor health. Here we are going to discuss about single phase motor.

Mostly three types problems are found in motor as below mentioned.
- Winding insulation resistance test.
- Winding coil open test.
- Short circuit test.
A- Insulation resistance test:
Insulation resistance test is carried out or implemented on running and starting winding. After this we can know about both windings insulation is ok or not. This test can be done as two types like as testing lamp methods and multimeter methods.
B- Open circuit test:
Open circuit test is carried out or implemented on running and starting winding. After this we can know about both windings open or close. This test can be done as two types like as testing lamp methods and multimeter methods.
C- Short circuit test:
Short circuit test is carried out or implemented on running and starting winding. After this we can know about both windings is short or not body or each other. This test can be done as two types like as testing lamp methods and multimeter methods.
4- Types of testing methods:
When motor does not works then we had to check for fault finding. Three types motor testing methods are available just like below mentioned.
- Testing lamp test methods.
- Multimeter test methods.
- Megger test methods.
1- Testing lamp test methods:
Test lamp is a instrument test circuit. It is connected in series with faulty Equipment.
A- Insulation resistance test:
Single phase motor has two windings, one is running and second is starting. For insulation resistance test, one winding is connected in series with test lamp. Test lamp one rest wire point is connected with phase and winding second rest point is connected with neutral.
If the test lamp is glowing in dim condition then the winding is normal or insulation is normal. If the test lamp is glowing brightly then the winding insulation has burnt or winding is not normal. It means rewinding is required. The other second winding can be checked with same process
B- Open circuit test:
For open circuit test, the one winding is connected in series with test lamp and rest winding one point and test lamp one point is connected with supply. If the testing lamp is glowing then the winding is normal. If the lamp is not glowing then winding is not ok or break. As same process can be implemented to the second winding.
C- Short circuit test:
The short circuit test is carried out between windings an body as short condition. One winding is connected with test lamp in series other rest point of winding is connected with body and neutral is connected with body. If the lamp is glowing then winding is short with body. Same process can be followed with other windings.
2- Multimeter test methods:
Multimeter is a measuring instrument which is used for equipment parameters value checking like as resistance, continuity, voltage etc.
A- Insulation resistance test:
For insulation test, the multimeter knob is selected on resistance mode and meter both lead is connected with winding both ends. Check the value of resistance on display. Follow the same process on second winding. Compare the resistance value in both windings,
B- Open circuit test:
Open circuit test is called as continuity test. Select the multimeter knob on continuity. Connect the lead to the windings both ends. If the continuity sound is coming then the winding is normal. If the sound is not coming then the winding is open. Follow the same process for other windings.
C- Short circuit test:
Short circuit test is carried out between body and windings each others. Select the multimeter knob on continuity mode. One lead of meter is connect with motor body and second lead is connected with both windings one by one. If the sound is coming then winding is sort with body.
3- Megger test methods:
Megger is a high voltage resistance checker which is used big size cables, HT lines and motors.
A- Insulation resistance test:
Megger is used for big size single phase motors. Megger testing leads is connected with both ends of windings. If the megger is digital then press the test button or analog meter then move the handle. If the value is infinity on display then winding insulation is normal. If the value is zero then the winding insulation is not normal.
B- Open circuit test:
Connect the testing leads of megger with windings ends point. Press the test button, if the value is infinity then windings is open and the value is zero then winding is normal.
C- Short circuit test:
Connect the testing leads of megger with windings and motor body points. Press the test button, if the value is infinity then windings is normal or not short and the value is zero then winding is short.
