1 - Clamp Meter:

A clamp meter is a digital multimeter with current sensor which is used for measuring the current, voltage and resistance of circuit or any Equipment. We can categorized the clamp meter in two parts, one is clamp which is used for current measuring and other is probes which is used for voltage and resistance measuring.

Clamp meter: types, Precautions and Measuring process.

A current transformer are used as secondary in zaw of clamp meter. It is the current sensing secondary which works as open and close zaw type. When Load wire is covered by clamp meter zaw then load wire works as primary and zaw works as secondary. Output zaw CT is connected to the microprocessors of clamp meter resultant current value is showed on display as numeric.
Clamp meter are used for the servicing, maintenance and installation on the industrial Equipments.

2 - Types of Clamp meter:

  • AC Current clamp meter
  • DC current clamp meter
  • DC and AC clamp meter
  • Flexible zaw clamp meter

3 - Types of Measuring Parameters of Clamp meter:

AC Current range
  • 0A to 20A
  • 0A to 200A
  • 0A to 400A
  • 0A to 1000A
Insulation test range
  • 0A to 20MΩ
  • 0A to 2000MΩ
AC Voltage range
  • upto 200V
  • upto 750V
DC Voltage range
  • upto 20mV
  • upto 2V
  • upto 20V
  • upto 200V
  • upto 1000V
Resistance value range
  • upto 200Ω
  • upto 2KΩ
  • upto 20KΩ
  • upto 200KΩ
  • upto 2MΩ

4 - Precautions of using Clamp meter:

  • Fix the pointer properly on zero position with the help of adjuster.
  • The item range should be selected properly and according range, the knob also should be selected.
  • The value of range should be selected higher for ex. voltage range should be kept higher as 750 volt.
  • For current measuring the meter should be connected in series.
  • The presence of voltage in any circuit, the resistance should not be measured.
  • Keep the hand or finger away during measuring high voltage.

5 - Working Function of clamp meter:

1- Measuring Current:
  • The knob is selected as required current as upto 200A or 1000A.
  • Zaw CT is covered around the load wire.
  • Current value can read on display.
2- Measuring Insulation test:
  • The knob is selected as higher resistance value as upto 2000MΩ.
  • Test pin is connected to the both side.
  • Insulation value is showed on display.
3- Measuring DC voltage
  • Set he knob according DCV range.
  • Connect the black test pin into negative and red test pin into positive point.
  • Read the value on display.
4- Measuring AC voltage
  • Fix the range selector knob according AC Voltage range.
  • Connect the black test pin and red test pin into phase and neutral point.
  • Read the value on display.
5- Measuring Resistance Ω
  • Fix the range selector knob according DC current.
  • Short the black and red test pin and adjust the pointer on zero position so that the value could be check accurate.
  • Connect the black test pin into negative and red test pin into positive point.
  • Read the value on display.

6 - Applications of Clamp Meter:

Clamp meter are used for low voltage electrical circuit, DC circuit, electronic circuit, printed circuit board etc.
